Sustainable Environmental Assessment
This Orientation to Sustainable Environmental Assessment course uses the environmental process (40 CFR 1500) in general and HUD’s (24 CFR 58), since it delegates NEPA & other environmental authorities to the local level, as a framework for providing insights into issue identification and analysis pointed to consideration of alternatives. The class makes use of abundant HUD resources but also uses interactive classroom exercises. The case oriented exercises provide participants with simulated hands-on experience and opportunities for Q & A and peer-to-peer education.
Projects with even a small federal nexus must go through an environmental planning process that not only requires a compliance check with specific environmental laws, but also provides opportunities to add value through public input, mitigation of potential adverse impacts, and sustainable design. This course uses the HUD Environmental Review Online System (HEROS), a state-of-the-art platform for NEPA environmental review, to actively engage participants in a classroom simulation.

Spirometry Course
OSHA regulations require that individuals who administer spirometry tests as part of mandated health surveillance for employees exposed to cotton dust and respirable crystalline silica have completed NIOSH-approved spirometry training courses. MSHA regulations require this training for those administering spirometry tests to coal miners as part of their mandated health surveillance. NIOSH-approved spirometry training courses have also been widely accepted for training healthcare professionals in other occupational settings.
The purpose of the course is for participants to gain the knowledge and practical skills to collect accurate and valid spirometry results. The initial training requires a minimum of 16 hours instruction.
For primary care practitioners, internists, allergists, pulmonologists, occupational medicine physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and their office technical staff who are, or may be, conducting spirometry.
Our practicum instructors have extensive practical experience in spirometry testing to help participants learn proper testing procedures. No prior training in pulmonary function testing is required. Please bring a calculator to class. If possible, please bring a print-out or tracing from your spirometer to use as a comparison during this course.
