Academic Programs

Administratively housed in the University of Illinois Chicago's School of Public Health Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (EOHS), the Great Lakes Center for Occupational Health and Safety provides graduate-level education in several occupational and environmental health and safety fields.

We train students to become:

  • HEALTH & SAFETY SPECIALISTS, who identify hazards, create safety programs, and conduct inspections to comply with regulations for safer work environments.
  • OCCUPATIONAL EPIDEMIOLOGISTS, who look at disease patterns and data to investigate the causes and risk factors for a health condition, specifically related to workplaces.
  • OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE PHYSICIANS, who are doctors knowledgeable in environmental exposures and specialized in treating work-related health conditions, such as a painter with a respiratory disease from inhaling chemicals.
