Academic Programs
Introduction
Administratively housed in the University of Illinois Chicago's School of Public Health Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (EOHS), the Great Lakes Center for Occupational Health and Safety provides graduate-level education in several occupational and environmental health and safety fields.
Programs
Industrial Hygiene
The Industrial Hygiene concentration is offered to degree candidates in the MPH*, MS, and PhD programs. Students in this concentration will approach health hazards in the workplace and the general environment from an interdisciplinary perspective. The MS and MPH curricula give students both quantitative skills and field experiences that link exposure assessment to hazard reduction. Research skills are emphasized in the MS and PhD, while the MPH offers a practice-based approach to the field.
Learn more here about the Industrial Hygiene (IH) concentration and for a list of faculty members.
*Admission to this program is currently suspended. For information about the newly developed Master of Science (MS) program with a concentration in Occupational Safety, please contact us at eohsinfo@uic.edu or visit the new program webpage.
Occupational Safety
The Occupational Safety concentration is offered in partnership with Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in the College of Engineering. This concentration offered to degree candidates in the MPH*, MS, and PhD programs, will provide students a solid foundation in the prevention of acute traumatic injury in the occupational setting, and help prepare students for leadership and research positions. The selected coursework will enable students to approach safety problems from an engineering hazard control perspective while understanding how these problems fit into the broader societal spectrum of the public’s health.
Learn more here about the Occupational Safety (OS) concentration.
*Admission to this program is currently suspended. For information about the newly developed Master of Science (MS) program with a concentration in Occupational Safety, please contact us at eohsinfo@uic.edu or visit the new program webpage.
Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology
The Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology (OEE) concentration is offered by the division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of Public Health. This concentration, for PhD candidates only, teaches students how to identify and interpret data relevant to occupational and environmental epidemiology.
Learn more here about the OEE Program, or contact OEE Program Director, Dr. Mary Turyk.
Agricultural Health and Safety
The Agricultural Health and Safety (ASH) concentration is offered at UI Urbana-Champaign by the College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences (ACES). This concentration for MS and PhD candidates provides a basic foundation in agricultural safety and health for students seeking careers in agricultural and rural-related professions. This training is available as elective courses and is offered to graduate students.
For more information, contact ASH Program Director, Dr. Josie Rudolphi.
Residency in Occupational Medicine
The Residency in Occupational Medicine is a two-year, ACGME-accredited training program leading to a MPH degree and board eligibility in Occupational Medicine. It is open to physicians who have completed an ACGME-accredited internship year in the U.S. and are eligible for medical licensure in Illinois.

definitions
We train students to become:
- INDUSTRIAL HYGIENISTS, who control workplace hazard exposures, such as measuring air levels for toxins.
- HEALTH & SAFETY SPECIALISTS, who identify hazards, create safety programs, and conduct inspections to comply with regulations for safer work environments.
- OCCUPATIONAL EPIDEMIOLOGISTS, who look at disease patterns and data to investigate the causes and risk factors for a health condition, specifically related to workplaces.
- OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE PHYSICIANS, who are doctors knowledgeable in environmental exposures and specialized in treating work-related health conditions, such as a painter with a respiratory disease from inhaling chemicals.
